Consulting | Developmental Editing

Do you need help polishing your work? Whether it’s a book, script, short story, or even just a synopsis, I’ve got you covered. You can hire me for individual sessions, full developmental editing, or just some of its parts. Each project is unique, but if you’re new to this process, here’s an overview of what a typical developmental edit involves.

Overview of a typical project
  • Initiation phase
    • We discuss the expectations, terms, and deadlines. For longer projects (such as books), we can agree on a free sample edit up to 1,000 words
    • I propose a quote
    • Once the deposit is paid, we move on to the main work phase
  • Main work phase (may consist of some or all of these):
    • First read – I annotate the project with comments and questions
    • Second read – I delve deeper into the story, focusing on problem areas and proposing solutions
    • Map – I map the entire structure of your story, scene by scene
    • Editorial Letter / Revision Plan – I propose a detailed revision plan
  • Final phase
    • I hand over all the files, including invoice for the remaining portion of the fee
    • I remain available for a reasonable amount of questions
Focus areas

You can usually expect comments and suggestions on:

  • Improving the structure of your story
  • Developing the characters, their actions, and motivations
  • Fixing plot holes
  • Tying up loose ends
  • Aligning the story with your target audience
  • Maintaining a consistent genre, tone, and voice
  • Managing length, order, and pacing
  • Addressing problematic representation
